Every book I've written shares a similar origin story: I wrote the book I needed and that I saw others needing, too. Check out the titles below or find me on Amazon to read more.
Being a PhD student is not easy. Navigating the highly competitive world of academia while working hard for little or no pay would be stressful for anyone—but it’s especially challenging for graduate students who are also parents.
Featuring contributions from more than forty current and former graduate students raising children, Parenting While PhDing offers valuable advice for students and administrators. Parents will get practical recommendations on both child care and self-care, learning how to form supportive personal and professional networks while establishing a healthy work/life balance. The collection also offers thoughtful suggestions on how to make graduate programs less toxic and more inclusive.
For the creative fulfillment of writers who identify as runners, walkers, or movers, Running, Thinking, Writing: Embodied Cognition in Composition unveils the varied understandings of the relationship between writing activity and physical activity. The book provides an interdisciplinary overview of relevant research from the fields of composition studies, cognitive science, neuroscience, and sports psychology before proposing a new theoretical framework for explaining what happens to writers when they are moved to develop their writing while their bodies are in motion. With a running metaphor guiding the chapters in this book, readers will be challenged to view writing as embodied cognition and to realize the benefits of embodiment for all writers.
First-Year Composition is an open-source textbook designed to support the work of undergraduate writers enrolled in composition courses. Although many of the topics addressed in these digital pages are written with first- and second-year students in mind, the content remains relevant for writers at any stage of writerly development.
The aim of each chapter is to answer a question presented in the chapter’s title. The answers to these questions involve deep inquiry into the many rhetorical and structural nuances of composition work, and that’s why each chapter features multiple sections that unpack the complexity and critical thinking that goes into the writing process. Or, to put it another way, all good writing begins with asking good questions.
